The Office of External Relations is the primary point of contact for engagements between the U.S. International Trade Commission (USITC) and the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative (USTR) and various executive branch agencies; the Congress; foreign governments; international organizations; the public; and the media. The office also facilitates meetings with visitors from across the nation and globe.

External Relations also plays a key role in keeping Commissioners and senior USITC staff updated on emerging issues that could impact the agency's mission and reputation. The office also coordinates responses to Presidential requests for advice and information on trade matters and manages the USITC’s relationships with the broader international trade community.

Mission

The mission of the Office of External Relations is to develop and maintain an effective liaison program between the U.S. International Trade Commission (USITC) and its varied external customers and manage the public information activities of the USITC. The Director, Office of External Relations, reports to the Commission.

Primary Functions

  • Is the main point of contact for the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative (USTR) and other executive branch agencies; the Congress; the Government Accountability Office; state and local governments; foreign governments; international organizations; the public; and the international, national, and local news media.
  • Coordinates USITC responses to section 332 (factfinding) investigation requests and other trade-focused inquiries from the President, USTR, other executive branch agencies, and the Congress, ensuring the timely delivery of information and assistance from the USITC.
  • Represents the USITC on the interagency Trade Policy Staff Committee (TPSC). Coordinates the participation of USITC staff in TPSC subcommittee activities of direct interest to the USITC.
  • Develops and writes news releases and publications for external audiences, as well as internal newsletters and other informational materials about USITC activities.
  • Manages correspondence and other formal communication with the executive branch and the Congress.
