In 2016, U.S. cross-border exports of services to Japan totaled $43.6 billion, while imports totaled $27.5 billion. This yielded a services trade surplus of $16.0 billion. Exports decreased by 1.6 percent from 2015, while imports increased by 4.5 percent. Travel services accounted for the largest share of U.S. cross-border exports of services to Japan (38.1 percent), and professional services accounted for the second-largest share (19.1 percent). Charges for the use of intellectual property accounted for the largest share of U.S. cross-border imports of services from Japan (37.9 percent), and distribution services accounted for the second-largest share (25.4 percent).
