Recent Trends in U.S. Services Trade, 2017 Annual Report
Investigation no. 332-345
Publication 4682 (May 2017)
Welcome to the homepage for the Recent Trends in U.S. Services Trade: 2017 Annual Report, published by the U.S. International Trade Commission (Commission or USITC). Recent Trends is the Commission’s annual report on developments in the U.S. services trade; this year, its focus is on financial services.
Recent Trends 2017 first presents a qualitative and quantitative overview of U.S. trade in services. As in previous years, it also highlights selected services sectors and geographic markets that have shaped the United States’ recent performance in services trade. This year’s in-depth chapters cover accounting and auditing services, architecture and engineering services, legal services, and management consulting services, exploring global market conditions, trade performance, and industry outlooks for each sector. An additional chapter summarizing the USITC’s tenth annual services roundtable focuses on the usefulness of the “modes of supply” structure set out by the General Agreement on Trade in Services for structuring commitments on services trade, as well as the importance of initiatives to harmonize regulations and to liberalize services trade.
The report is now enhanced by new interactive figures displaying data for the five countries that are the United States’ largest trading partners in services, as well as for six aggregated U.S. services sectors. The interactive figures focus on cross-border trade in services, which occurs when suppliers in one country sell services to consumers in another country, with people, information, or money crossing national boundaries in the process. Links to the interactive figures can be accessed through the menu on the left.
Note: U.S. suppliers can also sell services to consumers abroad through affiliates established in foreign countries. However, since data reported for these transactions are less detailed than data for cross-border trade in services, and are available for fewer industries and countries, they are not shown in this interactive format. Affiliate trade data is covered in the full report.
